St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru on Dec. 9, 1579. He was the illegimate son of a father of Spanish royalty and a mother who was a black former slave. St. Martin de Porres, a Dominican cooperator brother, established a children's hospital and orphanage. He worked with the needy and died in Lima on Nov. 3, 1639. He is a patron saint of mixed race people, race relations, schools, and education. Canonized: 1962. His feast day is Nov. 3.
